21 Jan 2010 -- New Zealand, Auckland
We're in New Zealand. Took a long flight from Fiji to Auckland. It started to rain just after we landed. Picked up a rental car, walked out into the rain and drove out of town going north. We wanted to see the whole of New Zealand so getting out of Auckland was first. Here Janet is celebrating our first walk on a New Zealand beach.
We've all heard about New Zealand having more sheep that people. Probably true but the first sheep we saw were red. What's this!! Some sort of advertisement I suppose, but we never found out.
Saw this road sign and stared looking for a Kiwi. Finding one turned out to be not so easy. They are only out at night, are rare, so rare New Zealand has a program sort of like our Condor program trying to save the species.
This sign explains somewhat of why Kiwi's are hard to find. Dog owners, I'm sure are not happy with this but it seems dogs and other introduced species have devastated the Kiwi.
